Structure Does Not Stifle Creativity

There is a belief out there that those who are really creative are disorganized and scatterbrained. The depiction that usually comes to mind is a painter who’s home is a mess that can’t remember even the most basic family things. They just can’t live normally because their creativity doesn’t let them. That’s honestly a characture. Maybe in the past some people did that, but only rich people. Most people now do not have the means to do that. And its not even necessary to live like that to actually be creative and successful at it.

Chaos is a stereotype

  • messy, loud, unorganized

  • everyone has deadlines and criteria for work

  • We all have pressure to do many things

Through constraints in the world, some great things have been made

  • Computers were pushed farther in the race to space (movie Hidden Figure)

Too much structured knowledge can hold you back

  • don’t spend all your time researching

  • no one can follow someone else’s specific plan

  • this idea of a creative can be constraining to you own process
